The animals listed in this section have been found and are currently held at the SPCA Centre in Dunedin. Found animals will be advertised here for 7 days.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 1999, all stray animals must be held at SPCA Otago for 7 full days so that owners have a chance to reclaim them. SPCA Otago will take all reasonable steps to identify the owner of the animal as well as any necessary action to prevent or mitigate any suffering of the animal.
If you recognise or own any of the found pets listed here, please call us on (03) 4738252 as soon as possible. It is important not to delay collection, as after the 7-day advertising period concludes, we must proceed quickly through the re-homing process. We may ask for verification of ownership from people claiming an animal in our care, this may be in the form of the animal's vaccination booklet, or photographs of the animal.
If you have found an animal, please help us by trying to find its owners before bringing it to our Animal Centre. We are often full to capacity in our Arrivals area, so if you can search and find the pet's owner you will relieve pressure on SPCA Otago and also facilitate a much faster reunion for the animal and its owner. Please download and print this 'Found Pet form' to distribute around your area, alerting your neighbours about the animal you have found. This is the quickest way to locate the owner or someone who may recognise the animal. Please also refer to our Stray Cat Advice and Stray Dog Advice for more information on what to do with an animal you have found. You can also check the dedicated Facebook page Lost and Found Pets Dunedin, and check the online site LPF - Lost Pet Finders.
If you are concerned about a missing pet, please call us on (03) 4738252. If you have lost a dog, please call your local council as well, in case their Animal Control department has found it.
